re: Guild Wars 2 Release - Home server

Someone tell me where we're setting our Home server to come August 25th?! Got Milkwagon on board from this past BWE3 event, so now just need to know what home server we're going to choose. It's $22.50 (in gems) to change Home servers once you've picked one.

FYI, Home server affects WvWvW only really. PvE-wise, you can play with anyone on any World server at any time.
Quote:
Home world
When a player logs on to Guild Wars 2 for the first time they are asked to select a home world. This is the world the player represents in World versus World PvP. How well the world plays WvW determines the bonuses the player receives from the power of the Mists. This is the only advantage to world selection and WvW is the only game type which prevents players from different worlds playing together.

Changing to another home world will cost 1,800 and can only be done once every seven days.[1] In addition, after changing to a new home world, players will lose their power of the Mists bonuses until the beginning of the next World versus World match.[2]

Thib expressed interest in having us join up with his other buddies, but I don't know whether or not they know what realm they're going to play on. Other than that, as far as I know it's still TBD. A terribad schedule has kept me from hopping on vent when everyone is around, so I could be out of the loop.

Great to hear you will be playing, Chyler!

I have a couple of friends who will likely be joining us on our home server.

Looking forward to grouping together :D

Adam (some of you know him as Milkwagon) has been doing quite a bit of research on home servers for us. Because the only impact a home server will have is in WvW PvP, that is where he has focused his research.

Looks like quite a few of the old school DAoC and Warhammer world PVP guilds are focused on a couple servers. These guilds are apparently known for their organization of world PVP in previous games and they are going to one of 2 servers: Either Jade Quarry or Sorrows Furnace. Looks like Jade Quarry is winning the battle currently.

We will continue to monitor, but joining a server where the strong organizers of World PVP live is a sound theory IMO and I think we seriously consider the server that wins out on their debate/voting.

If anyone else is doing any research on home servers, please post here. I will make sure there is a final decision put in this thread before opening day, so we can all join the same server, and this time, the decision on which server to join will have some thought behind it (ahem, Nalen).

Kisses and Gropes!

Aye, I've been watching both. Most seem to have switched over to using the website, so some of the older entries on the forum thread haven't been modified to reflect changes. And with the website being updated to allow guilds to list their focus, casual/hardcore preference, etc, I suspect that trend will continue.

As far as tracking ex-DAoC/WAR players, this site seems to have a fair amount of representation, although obviously not anything that could be called official. The poll concluded with Jade Quarry as the top choice:

http://gw2relics.guildlaunch.com/

Admittedly, my hunch to follow these guys is not without a few potential pitfalls. It may end up being a bunch of fruity RPers, or worse, sticks in the mud that are entirely too serious. But I know they were very well represented in WvW in BWE2 and BWE3, which indicates to me they will at least offer a fighting chance for the server. And even then, it may all mean nothing once the server matching kicks in and for whatever reason our eventual home server ends up getting it's ass beaten regularly by whoever...

One other thought is to look at the spread of guilds that have signed up on the website. It seems a safe bet to pick a server where a healthy variety of guilds live. JQ seems to have a nice mix of both casual and semi/hardcore, with focus on PVE, WvW, or both.

http://www.gw2guilds.org/guilds/us/jade-quarry

edit: also check out http://www.jadequarry.com/main . i'm sure JQ is not the only server with a community website started, but this seems like a very good step in the right direction.

Only other thought to share is that there are a handful of servers to avoid:

Anvil Rock (rumored to be the 4chan server)
Crystal Desert (looks like it'll be very crowded for a long time)
Darkhaven (Reddit server. by some estimates, will become 4chan-lite)

Oh lawdy, I wonder if the banner at the bottom of their website is any indication as to what MMOs they have played together as a guild.

The couple friends of mine are probably rolling on Ehmry Bay btw. Theres nothing special about that server other than they are trying to avoid the Warhammer crowd and Reddit/4Chan Servers.

I personally don't care much about WvWvW so I'll go to whatever server, the little bit I did was pretty cluster fuck if you stayed with the objectives, but who knows maybe I just didnt do enough.

Hi guys and gals, some of you may remember me from WoW some time ago. Oedipial got me to preorder GW2, so I'll be there with them, wherever they wind up. I was Kilaen with some of you ages ago. Hope to see you in game!

Some more thoughts on a home server. There are a few large WvW alliances out there. One called "Titan Alliance" sounds like they are good at what they do and have a good attitude.

You can read their charter here:

http://titanalliance.net/titanalliance

I don't think they've declared a server yet, but following these guys might be a good idea. They work with PUGs or other small guilds and seem to have their shit together.

IF/when we ever decide to WvW, it would be cool to be part of an organized team.
